pE-300lite
Product Description
The pE-300lite is a simple white light LED illumination unit. It provides a broad spectrum of illumination, covering the excitation bands of common fluorescent stains. Operation is by a remote manual control pod with instant on/off and intensity control from 0-100%.
The system comprises a pE-300lite Light Source, control pod, and power supply. It can be specified with a microscope adaptor for direct fit configuration or with a 3mm diameter liquid light guide if there is a need to keep the source of illumination remote from the microscope. An optional pE-Universal Collimator and microscope adaptor can be selected for use with a liquid light guide.
As a replacement to a metal halide source on a confocal microscope, the liquid light guide configuration is particularly suitable for pre-aligning samples before scanning commences. In this way, photo bleaching of the sample can be minimised when LED illumination is used.
With an expected lifetime in excess of 25,000 on hours and a comprehensive range of microscope adaptors, the pE-300lite can be fitted to most current and older microscopes and operate for many years without aligning or replacing bulbs. The result is a safe, convenient illumination system without any additional operating costs.
There are two pE-300lite configuration options:
Direct-fit
for connecting to a microscopes – by selecting from a range of microscope adaptors which covers all current and most older models. A simple once only adjustment will allow optimisation to the optical path of the microscope.

pE-300white
Product Description
The pE-300white is a compact and simple to use LED illumination unit. It provides a broad spectrum of illumination, covering the excitation bands of common fluorescent stains. Operation is by a remote manual control pod with instant on/off and intensity control from 0-100%. Remote control is available via USB or TTL trigger.
The system comprises a pE-300white Light Source, control pod, and power supply.
An additional benefit of the pE-300white is that stains can be viewed either individually or in combination, without filter cube changes. This makes it ideal for use with multi-band filter sets as the screening process can be simplified when fewer filter cubes are used. Independent control of the three LED wavebands means that the user can control the level of excitation of each fluorescent stain independently on a multi-stained sample, potentially removing the need for single band filter sets altogether.
With an expected lifetime in excess of 25,000 on hours and a comprehensive range of microscope adaptors, the pE-300white can be fitted to most current and older microscopes and operate for many years without aligning or replacing bulbs. The result is a safe, convenient illumination system without any additional operating costs.

pE-300ultra
Product Description
The pE-300ultra is the most controllable member of the pE-300 Series. In addition to the many features of the pE-300lite and the pE-300white, the system offers precise control over wavelength intensity and shuttering. Until now these benefits have only been accessible to users of high end, highly flexible illuminators such as the CoolLED pE-4000.
A broad spectrum of illumination is provided, covering the excitation bands of common fluorescent stains.
Triggering from multiple TTL inputs, coupled with the ability to mount inline excitation filters, provides microsecond switching of pre-filtered excitation light. This, when paired with today’s high performance multi-band filter sets, facilitates imaging traditionally done using a white light source and a filter wheel, with all the benefits of LED, and most excitingly at speeds not previously so affordable.
The system comprises a pE-300ultra Light Source, Control Pod, set of three Excitation Filter Holders and Power Supply. It can be specified with a microscope adaptor for direct fit configuration or with a 3mm diameter liquid light guide if there is a need to keep the source of illumination remote from the microscope. An optional pE-Universal Collimator and microscope adaptor can be selected for use with a liquid light guide.
A benefit of the pE-300ultra is that stains can be viewed either individually or in combination, without filter cube changes. This makes it ideal for use with multi-band filter sets as the screening process can be simplified when fewer filter cubes are used. Independent control of the three LED channels means that the user can control the level of excitation of each fluorescent stain independently on a multi-stained sample, potentially removing the need for single band filter sets altogether.
An important additional feature of the pE-300ultra is that it includes CoolLED’s “Sequence Runner” multiple channel excitation mode. Users can define the order of their fluorophore capture using their pE-300ultra Control Pod, then the pE-300ultra light source can accept a single TTL output from the experiment set-up’s camera to initiate the step-through of a sequence of excitation channels. This feature is independent of the individual channel TTL inputs on the light source. This offers users the facility to run through a sequence of excitation channels using a camera which has only a single TTL-out.
With an expected lifetime in excess of 25,000 on hours and a comprehensive range of microscope adaptors, the pE-300ultra can be fitted to most current and older microscopes and operate for many years without aligning or replacing bulbs. The result is a safe, convenient illumination system without any additional operating costs.
There are two pE-300ultra configuration options:

pE-4000
Product Description
As the first company to introduce LEDs into fluorescence microscopy, CoolLED has developed a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of configuring and selecting filter sets for samples which have multiple stains. These ’multi-band’ filters must have a corresponding absorption and emission band for each stain and the bands must be kept spectrally separate to ensure there is no overlap.
CoolLED’s innovation comes from recognizing that all the stains used in multi-band work can have their absorption bands divided into four separate groups across the spectrum due to the restricted bandwidth available. This has allowed the development of a patent-pending, wavelength-grouping concept which makes it possible to deliver more power in an efficient four channel system.
With its unique 16 selectable LED wavelengths, the pE-4000 ensures optimum compatibility with all single and multi-band filter sets. The flexibility and extensive functionality of the pE-4000 broadens the range of illumination options in core facilities.
The compact pE-4000 Light Source houses all the LEDs, their combining optics, thermal management and control electronics. A dual mode control pod gives manual control in either White or Advanced modes. Light is delivered to the microscope by either a single liquid light guide (LLG) or fiber. LLGs can be used in conjunction with CoolLED’s pE-Universal Collimator which can accept a microscope adaptor from CoolLED’s extensive range.

pE-100wht
Product Description
The pE-100wht is a compact and simple-to-use LED illumination system for transmitted light applications and comprises a pE-100wht LED Light Source, control pod, and power supply. The user is given instant on/off and intensity control in 1% steps from the manual control pod which can be positioned close at hand. Remote control is available via a TTL trigger.
The system uses a new LED technology which has a spectrum closely matching halogen. Previous LED technology offered illumination which was weak at longer wavelengths. This made the red element of images appear faint and caused colours to lose their clarity.
When adjusting the intensity of the pE-100wht, the balance between the colours remains constant so there is no need to make adjustments to the colour balance that is necessary when using halogen. In addition, the pE-100wht does not produce unwanted light in the UV which makes it a safer product for the user as risk of eye damage is significantly lower.
Features
- Spectral performance matched to 100W halogen – familiar images
- No variation in colour across intensity range – no need to colour balance
- Replaces 100W halogen lamp housing on most current and older microscopes – quick & easy exchange
- No unwanted UV – reduced risk of eye damage
- Instant on/off – no shutters required, no warm up or cool down
- Simple to fit, simple to use – no need to align
- Stable & repeatable – reliable and consistent results
- Wide range of microscope adaptors – fits most microscopes
- Precise intensity control in 1% steps (0-100%) – no ND filters required
- Excellent uniformity over field of view – fixed and stable, no alignment necessary
- Long lifetime – expected to exceed 50,000 hours of operating time

pE-2
Product Information
The mercury-free pE-2 LED illumination system is designed for use on most epi-fluorescent microscopes. The output is stable, repeatable and controllable. High intensity light is generated within the pE-2 Light Source and delivered to the microscope via two liquid light guides and a combining collimator. This modular system accepts LAMs (LED Array Modules) selected from CoolLED’s wide range of LED wavelengths. These LAMs can be interchanged by the user so that different LED wavelengths can be illuminated depending on the application. The system can drive up to 4 LED wavelengths. Recent developments in LED technology have enabled increased intensity in what was historically the weaker green-yellow-red (“GYR”) region of the LED spectrum. A new wide spectrum GYR LAM is now available and can readily be fitted to new and existing pE-2 systems. The graph below shows the greater comparative intensity of this LAM over the previous LED wavelengths available for this spectral region. The system comprises a pE-2 Light Source which powers and thermally controls the LAMs, two liquid light guides, a combining collimator fitted with a microscope adaptor, and a control pod. The collimator includes an exchangeable dichroic mirror which is matched to combine the selected LED wavelengths from each installed LAM. Excitation light can be filtered within the pE-2 system instead of within the microscope so that the need for an excitation filter wheel for dual staining and other fast-switching applications is removed. For this purpose, two filter holders are provided with the collimator. When populated with excitation filters, these can be inserted into the optical path within the collimator. With an expected lifetime in excess of 25,000 on hours and a comprehensive range of LED wavelengths and microscope adaptors, the pE-2 can be fitted to most current and older microscopes and operate for many years without aligning or replacing bulbs. The result is a versatile and configurable fluorescence illumination system without any additional operating costs.
Features
- Modular system which drives up to 4 wavelengths – suitable for all fluorescence experiments
- Integrated with many imaging software packages – perfect for automation and time-lapse
- Collimator accepts excitation filters for fast-switching applications – filter wheel not required
- Instant on/off – no shutters required, no warm up or cool down

Accessories
Product Description
The pE-Dual Adapt allows two illumination systems to be connected physically to the fluorescence port of the microscope at the same time. This enables users to choose between LED illumination or mercury/metal-halide without having to exchange individual source and re-align them on the microscope.
Any CoolLED illumination system can be fitted to the port at 90 degrees with the mercury or metal halide attached to the in-line port. Switching between illumination systems is simply achieved by moving a mirror between 0 and 45 degrees with a lever. The in-line port has an additional manual shutter to prevent the white light from a mercury or metal halide illuminator causing interference when the CoolLED LED illumination system is being used.

pE-Combiners are used to combine two CoolLED illumination systems into a single optical path. A number of pE-Combiners can be used to support multiple systems on a microscope
An appropriate dichroic mirror is selected in each case to match the LED wavebands in the illumination systems. This is an excellent configuration for dual staining applications.
The pE-Combiner can be purchased as a package with wavelength-defined pE-100 illumination systems. An advanced version is available with excitation filter holders for users who wish to filter the excitation light before it enters the microscope or is delivered to the sample.
